The first in my “Candour” series, a collection of honest devices. Candour Cord exposes the internal structures of extension cords to give implicit understanding of function through “transparent forms”.
This project was inspired by the way I stacked paving slabs working at B&Q, rotating each slab 45 degrees to leave room for my fingers. This “functional sculpture” made me seek mundane objects that could be made beautiful by removing their casings. After taking apart many household appliances I discovered the bus bars inside extension cords, curving in an alternating pattern to create the parallel receptacles for a UK plug.
I conducted experiments such as pouring wax over components from devices and creating impressions in clay to arrive at the form you see here. This culminated in mechanically “breaking the loop” of the shape, a reflection of the broken circuit within.
